Interference

In my works, I follow the tradition of the modernists in their demand not only to look at art, but to experience it. “Interference” is an immersive experience that invites us to rediscover the world within us and around us by blurring the boundaries between listener and sound.
Let’s allow our ears to see.

With every sound that flows through the installation, we witness a fascinating disturbance – an interference that contains both dissonance and harmony. Interference is not only a phenomenon of physics, but for me it is also a means of combining art and science. It represents the intersection of waves – be they light, sound or water waves – and the resulting patterns and structures that arise when these waves overlap.
In science, interference is a key to understanding quantum mechanics. It show us that light and matter can have both wave and particle properties. “Interference” is a sound installation that demonstrates how the superposition of sound waves can create not only an aesthetic, but also – I hope – a profound emotional experience.
The use of interference in the sound installation reflects the complexity and hidden order of our world. It reminds us that behind the apparent chaos often lies a pattern waiting to be discovered. Patterns that shape the human experience and allow us to discover the harmony in the just mentioned apparent chaos.

It is ultimately new music, irritating to listen to, but perhaps an aid to endeavor into a new area of musical experience. The musical composition was created in the spring of 2024 in Portugal, inspired by the constant breaking of waves.

The composition is played via a speaker system I developed especially for this installation, consisting of 4 controllable gimbals with built-in speakers on tripods, plus two speakers on the floor. The composition is in 6-channel audio, 4 channels of which also contain motion signals for the gimbal loudspeakers in addition to the sound files.

Visitors can change their position around the moving speakers at will, while the speakers do the same. There is no aligned sound position for this sound sculpture.
